STARS
INTERACTIVE SOFTWARE
Skills Testing Assessment & Rehabilitation
Simulator
The STARS system
is designed to perform separate and distinct tasks in order to gauge
driving skill. First, we understand that a therapist or clinician must assess
critical cognitive and physical skills to determine whether or not a client has
the ability to operate a vehicle safely and effectively. Second, if
they have the core abilities needed to operate a vehicle, it is necessary to evaluate
their performance in real-life situations. This includes driving in busy city
traffic, expressways, at night, in adverse weather, and in other risky and complex
situations. If rehabilitation is warranted, it is equally important to re-train
clients how to drive again. We accomplish these goals by using specialized
training and testing software. The STARS system includes assessment and
evaluation modules designed to measure reaction time, form and color perception,
driving accuracy, memory recognition, strength capacities and effective driving capacity
in real-world situations.
|
The
STARS system offers you:
- Specialized assessment and evaluation modules designed to test a client's
reaction time, strength capabilities, shape and color recognition, memorization and field
of view.
- A fully interactive and comprehensive curriculum package designed using a
building block approach to train your client how to merge, pass, scan for hazards and
other conflicts, drive in congested traffic, 2-lane and rural roads, intersections, crash
avoidance, adverse weather and much more.
- Wheel chair accessibility.
- Specialized hand controls for the disabled engineered to accommodate
right or left hand operators, using either a push-pull or push-twist method of operation.
- Fully-interactive simulation dynamics.
- Multi-language capabilities - with a click of the button, all on-screen
text, menu text, instruction, and voice narration is changed to Spanish or French.
- A virtually maintenance free design.

|
| Here
are just a few of the measures within the Assessment Software: |
| Motor
Skills |
- Strength capacity testing - Evaluates a client's ability
to operate the accelerator, brake & steering controls.
- Reaction time to brake - Displays a client's reaction
time, reaction distance, braking distance and overall stopping distance compared to ideal
values.
|
| Cognitive
Abilities |
- Speed management - Determines if a client can maintain a
steady speed and proper lane position. It records how many times the client veered
out of his/her lane to the left and right, as well as how many times the client went under
or over the speed limit.
|
| Visual
Capacities |
- Perception of shapes & colors - Records if the
client can identify different shapes and colors, which would indicate their ability to
recognize and obey road signs.
- Remembering shapes & colors - Tests the client's
ability to remember what they have seen.
- Memorization - Memory test using different formats
varying in complexity and speed. Can the client process information quickly?
- Field of view - Allows the OT to evaluate the client's
ability to perceive objects over a 120 degree field of view.

|
| Once
it has been determined that your client has the basic physical and cognitive skills
necessary to operate a vehicle, it is necessary to find out if they can handle real-life
driving scenarios. This is where the second half of the STARS system comes into
play. These lessons are also ideal for rehabilitation and re-training a client how
to drive. Here is a basic overview of the STARS menu structure and lesson content: |
Getting Started
|
After
first learning how to use the simulator, each client is then thoroughly trained and
tested on the basics of car operation -- everything from dashboard controls and functions,
to indicator lights, pre-drive checks, starting and stopping the engine, moving off using
an automatic or manual transmission, maneuvering at slow speeds and much more. |
Basic Training |
The
client is trained and tested on how to make proper lane changes (entering/leaving a lane),
rules of intersections, turning left and right, merging and more. Each one of these
chapters is taught without the use of traffic interaction. The client is given the
opportunity to first learn the concepts before traffic complexity is added to complicate
the experience. |
Intermediate Training |
We
add complex traffic interaction to our intermediate exercises, which are designed to
introduce the client to the rigors of actual behind the wheel driving. The client
must learn to properly merge, exit a lane, handle busy intersections, follow vehicles,
pass and much more. |
Advanced Training |
This
offers adverse weather conditions, a number of collision avoidance and hazardous
scenarios, mechanical failure, reaction time testing and a complete chapter on how
to properly maintain a vehicle. |
