STARS Interactive Modular Driving Simulator

Simulator Systems International introduces the STARS fully-interactive driver rehabilitation training and assessment simulator. This driving simulator not only replicates the feel of driving a real car, but measures critical physical and cognitive skills including reaction time, driving and visual accuracy, form and color perception, memory recognition and strength capacities.

The STARS system offers a full 120-degree view of the virtual driving environment and realistic driving with full controls found in a typical car. Reporting capabilities providing documentation of driving performance, as well as realistic simulation enable the OT or CDRS to assess cognitive and physical skills in a safe and controlled environment.

The Concept

Our concept involves performing two distinct tasks. We understand that first a therapist must assess critical driving skills and whether or not a client has the ability to operate a vehicle safely and effectively. Secondly, if rehabilitation is warranted, it is equally important to train clients how to drive again. We accomplish both goals by using specialized training and testing software. The STARS system includes assessment and evaluation modules designed to measure reaction time, form and color perception, driving accuracy, memory recognition and strength capacities.

It also offers comprehensive driver education and rehabilitation training specially designed to assist clients in re-learning “how to drive”. It offers a complete lesson plan and “hands-on” practice sessions covering everything from how to operate both automatic and manual transmissions, dashboard functions and hand / foot controls, steering, gear control, accelerating and braking, proper lane changes, intersections, merging and passing. We also instruct defensive driving techniques, scanning principles, how to identify hazards, avoid collisions and much more. Challenging “risky-situations”, as well as adverse driving conditions such as fog, night and rain are included to better evaluate your clients.
The software is well-organized and easy to use. The system operates in a standard Windows 2000 operating system.

The STARS system offers fully-textured, high resolution, 3-dimensional graphics producing life-like images. It offers complex, unpredictable, multi-car traffic interaction, which exposes the client to the rigors of driving on challenging roadways. The STARS system incorporates realistic vehicle dynamics, which are designed to ensure the simulator's acceleration, braking and handling characteristics accurately mimic those of a real car.

The Curriculum

Comprehensive training and accredited curriculum designed to assist students in learning "how to drive" is offered with the STARS system. Over 30 different lessons with over 240 driving scenarios and virtually unlimited "free driving” is provided. The STARS system covers everything from pre-drive checks, how to operate a manual transmission, rules of the road, scanning principles, defensive driving techniques, avoiding collisions, identifying hazards, driving in adverse / impaired conditions and more by using a "building-block" approach to prepare inexperienced drivers. The STARS system offers complex, unpredictable, multi-car traffic interaction, which exposes operators to the rigors of driving on challenging roadways. The STARS system incorporates realistic vehicle dynamics, ensuring the simulator’s acceleration, braking and handling characteristics accurately mimic those of a real car.

The Car

The STARS system is comprised of separate “plug-and-play” modules for easy set-up and maintenance.

The Steering / Control Module contains a robust self-centering automotive steering wheel and multi-function “smart-stick” (with working intermittent wipers, lights, horn, auto-cancelling turn signals) and other user controls. A high-speed Intel Pentium 4 processor, hard drive, CD-ROM, floppy drive, USB ports, and Windows operating system is standard.

The Multi-View CPU Module allows for the unit to display the wide 3-Screen hi- resolution graphics. A high-speed Intel Pentium 4 processor, hard drive, USB and Network ports are available, and Windows operating system is standard. Provided with this module is a monitor tray to securely hold the three LCD flat panel displays.  This tray is not designed to support CRT Monitors.  This module and tray may be moved from one unit to another.

The Pedal Module contains the accelerator, brake, and optional clutch if the optional 5-Speed Manual Shifter Module is purchased. Or a Pedal Module can be fitted to contain a left and right accelerator and center brake if no 5-Speed Manual Shifter is desired.

The 5-Speed Manual Shifter Module offers realistic shifting and may be moved easily from one unit to the next.

The hand controls provide the actions of accelerating and braking instead of the Pedal Modules for use by disabled or handicapped operators.  The hand controls quickly convert from push / pull to push / twist and from left to right hand operation. The hand controls can be easily moved from one unit to another.

The system uses three LCD flat panel displays. The S-3300 is engineered to be robust and reliable, even during shipping or under strenuous use. The S-3300 system offers fully-textured, high resolution, 3-dimensional graphics producing life-like images.
